Skateboarding seems to be noticeably accepted on Veeky Forums, especially as of late. There are threads devoted to skateboarding-centered clothing brands very consistently. For a young 17 year old boy just making his way onto Veeky Forums, tired of the clothing template threads on /mu/, it can easily seem like skating it widely considered cool and fashionable by the older and more experienced users on this board.
It isn't.
You are looking at an echobox comprised of dozens of kids as young—if not younger—than you. There is not a collective of wiser elders sharing your hobby and giving it the stamp of approval.
Here is a nifty trick for realizing how immature or mature your personal choices are: am I part of a clique? Am I one of the "skater kids"? One of the "indie kids"? One of the "emo kids"? If your clothing and personal choices conform to standards set in place by a minor culture like that, ESPECIALLY one associated with young children, that should be a red flag to you. You need to reflect on why you are doing it. You want to fit in. You want to prove yourself to others in the movement. You are conforming. Now everyone does this to an extent, it would be foolish to claim otherwise, but you are trying to fit in with a movement owned by children and grown men who are idolized by children. Whether you care or not, people are looking at you and laughing because they used to be one of you until they grew up.
