A lot of shoe makers would argue that rubber soles compromise the shoe's structural integirty and design. You need to take proper care with well made leather shoes, and you need to moisturise the sole - rubber won't allow you to do that. Rubber also won't allow your shoes to breathe.

A lot of people get them re soled anyway so do whatever you see fits.
