I think it's just another crop. Crops always help a shoot, makes it look more natural and less posed. A smoke is especially good because it's so versatile. Cars, bikes, drinks, bags, dogs, other people whatnot work well too, but nothing compares to the cigarette. It's such effortless. I don't think there's anything phallic or sexual about smoking. Men can look just as cool doing it. I know there are people with smoking fetishes out there but it's rarely in the context of watching someone chain smoke and being turned on by just that alone.

It's the same reason why chew sticks or toothpicks can look. It gives off the impression that you're doing something other than just standing there. It's also the reason why my best friend ended up with a smoking habit, hanging out with art kids that wouldn't let you sit in their circle at the park unless you were smoking, which evolved into standing outside of clubs and smoking. Everyone likes to be doing something with their hands, it's why most people fiddle with their cellphones even thought there's nothing interesting going on, but that doesn't make you look as cool or engaging. Beer bottles give off the same effect but don't create the elegant silhouette that holing a cigarette does.

I'd be cool with ciggs if they didn't smell like shit and was a health hazard for everyone standing within a few feet of the smoker.
