I think you still need an extra layer (overcoat / oversized sweater) for it to work, so the attention isn't drawn purely to the shoes.

It's important to note that the square-toed shoes on OP's pic aren't really that usual and look more like shoes for women, but I think that generally it looks bad in a fit with only one or two layers (shirt+blazer for an example), as in attached pic.
