What are the historical roots of multiculturalism?

Cultural marxism is a meaningless combination of words but it does refer to something real.
Marx thought that capitalism will collapse under its own weight, so to speak.
He wanted, instead of waiting for it to collapse on its own and having the people suffer, to accelerate it and bring the communist Utopia earlier.
Cultural Marxism, despite being a misleading term, expresses certain feelings of discomfort with the ideas that seek to equalize different parts and societies of the world.

The frankfurt school members were interested in how modern, educated societies, could still act like complete animals.
Critical theory, casts doubt on everything, on scientific research for example, because scinetific research is also driven by cultural issues.
Who funds certain types of research? Why? what about things that nobody wants to fund? why not?

Lots of ancient civilizations had populations of many ethnicities. Some of the earlier mesopotamian cities had mixes of populations from the middle east and elsewhere.

We are talking about the idea and support of the idea. i.e supporting the notion that a society can be combined out of people with completely different cultures, tied only by trade and legal official laws.
As oppose to societies that accept immigrants but are constructed in such a way so as to force immigrants to adopt their new countries ideals and customs.

You forget the part where Mesopotamian multiculturalism grew organically, whereas the leftist version is forced onto countries top down, so that's not really a good comparison

why are multiculturalism and diversity mistaken for the same thing? multiculturalism is about as far away from diversity as you can get.

The term originated in Canada in reference to all the refugees displaced by ww2 and the term was popularized by the 70s in Canada after the counterculture movement. These ideas are a response to the irrationality of racism and monocultural attitudes.

Entities that hold multiple cultures have to justify themselves with something that doesnt butthurt its components. Be it universalist idenities (i.e. Ottoman, Roman, Chinese empires), "Imperial" identities (late Ottomans, Austro-Hungarian empire) or philosophies held as self-evident and universal (i.e. United States.)

Multiculturalism has existed since the dawn of man. Sicily is a great example of this. When Roger first conquered it from the Muslims in 1071, there were three profound cultures living together (the Latins, the Byzantines and the Muslims) and Sicily was governed with a mix of both. It was quite successful.

Multiculturalism implies it is justified to discriminate against someone from the majority culture to uplift someone from a minority culture. It is promoted by sad people full of hate who get "triggered" when they see too many "white faces".
