He's right though. Communists, especially Bolshivists, basically believe that the masses don't know what's good for them and that they need to be lead by the nose by "true" revolutionaries. Communism is only democratic when it suits those who spearhead the revolution.

The Communists did not have control until 1921-22. Even then they had to contend with decay caused by centuries of Imperialism, years of destruction caused by the Great War, and then more destruction caused by the counter-Revolution. Also on-going attacks by foreign Imperialists/Capitalists.

As a communist I will try explain the thought process of some of these things.

Russia was in the midst of a civil war and they were losing, the Soviets, weary of War Communism, basically wanted to strike, but striking would seriously fuck the war effort, thus the Soviets were crushed and workers forced back to work (or killed sadly)

It should be noted that the NEP did relax much of this, but too little too late imo.

Other issues is that the Russian public weren't exactly a progressive bunch, this is why Stalin pretty much reversed every actual decent thing about the Revolution, because those positive social gains at the time were viewed by most of the public as "Degeneracy".

Lenin fucked up, but I understand the thought processes at the time. You had gained power, you are in the midst of a civil war and you are dealing with a population filled with fucking retards. What else are you going to do?
