It started with Jews tending to settle in cities and get involved with professions from which they were excluded by law and custom. Their tendency to stick together was also reinforced by external pressures.

More like a track record of being deliberately excluded from society, forced to live in certain districts and constantly at the whim of angry mobs and leaders. Yes, Judaism is a very tribal religion and culture that in its own texts isn't too keen on nonbelievers or Christians. People making the argument "They deserved their fate because they wouldn't assimilate!" act as if all the edicts, texts, libels, expulsions and pogroms had no impact on Jewish society, weren't deliberate and not at all reactionary.
