Actually, strange thing, the plague of the 14th century was the major contributor to how and why English became the prominently spoken and written language. Huge percentages of the population in wealthy urban city centers were wiped out, leaving the majority, the urban peasants far removed from nobility, to use their language more often, and become prominent.
