What do you call this shape of frames ?

Those are your standard round acetate frames. Each brand has their own take on it.

Nearly every guide I read says oval frames for a square face, but I'm not sure I'm a fan. Most of the designs seems very bold, but rimless glasses don't seem to look that good either. Should I bite the bullet and let them dominate the face?

Yo Telny, just get it over with and go for some heavier frames. You got the jaw for it. Steer clear from rimless glasses, like someone said, they make you look like and IT-drone. If you can't hang with fullrimmed glasses, get a pair that's goes over in a translucent bottom of the frame. Something like pic related could very well work for you. Otherwise, a pair of Clubmasters is never wrong imo.
