It's pretty simple, honestly. Every turn, you get armies based on how much of the map you control, with bonuses for continents. You move them to attack, rolling dice to see who loses armies. Attackers can roll more dice, but defender wins ties.
There's a few things more to it, but not a very complicated game.

What's the big deal about 3000? It's just trips. Now quads, that would be exciting. [s4s] would agree.

Risk was always really infuriating to me until I learned the strategy of always attacking as much as possible. Then it became trivial. I've hardly ever played against humans, though.

Yeah, so 3 dice against 2 at a time over and over again. Better odds, but that's hwo the game is made, to bleed the attacker despite it being the best option.
