Has anyone here played the original Phantasy Star games? How are they? Thinking about playing them because I want to learn more about the lore.

They're decent enough JRPGs. The ones before 4 might be a little brutal though since they're especially old school.

That said the lore is pretty irrelevant to now, although newer games like PSO2 do make references and narrative parallels to it they take place in separate universes.

But those who jumped straight to PSO2 with its PS4 release are greeted with this absolutely terrible BGM. That would be their first impression of the entire franchise, on top of this EP4 anime shit.

You can't instantly switch to your browser of choice for some light /pso2g/ shitposting experience.

1 is brutal, 2 is tedious, 3 is bad, 4 is solid.

1 is brutal because it offers very little in the way of hints as to your next target, and you need multiple large sums of money in a game where the best you can get from an enemy is like 100.

2 is tedious because the game has a whopping total of 3 bosses, 2 of them being right at the end, and the entire rest of the game is dungeon crawling with a fairly high encounter rate.

3 is bad (even though I don't mind it) because it is so massively different in style and system compared to the rest. If it got a proper remake with better story telling and a wider world set, it could be amazing.

4 is solid, good system, decent story, really fitting music, and a whole lotta nice optional stuff.
