No, in this case it most certainly is the engine, dummy. AA2's engine doesn't even make use of more than one core for the CPU and it was literally a decade old (or more) at the time AA2 came out. It's littered with issues and engine limitations. Unity is objectively a better engine than their old shit one.

I am not chanting that Unity made magic happen, I am saying that it was an objectively better tool for them to utilize and that there are a lot of problems with the old engine that Illusion used to utilize. The capability ceiling on that engine was much lower than the Unity engine.

You could have done the best programming possible on AA2 for instance but it would still have issues since that engine barely had any caching capability and it also only utilized one core.

Well they seem to have managed it in this game. Granted it isn't rendering much, but I was getting 140 fps during the H scenes.
