Hugging is easier once you get it down. You just need to position yourself correctly.

Try to position your hug target north-west of you or to your upper left (facing forward). Your hugs will always be aimed towards that direction instead of forward. Doing that might make it easier.

Of course, hugging difficulty varies depending on size.
