Honestly, the gameplay itself is only okay. I mean, it's a bullet hell overall, so there's not much you can really add to it. The characters are what got me hooked. Also, I know a lot of people think the soundtrack is a masterpiece, but I'm not so sure. Most of it is literally the same song being done in different ways, rehashed stuff from Toby's past projects, and a few original tunes. Whatever.

The Gungeon stomps UT in every way when it comes to gameplay, and I wish there was a decent general for it.

Oh, and Toby is a one-hit wonder hack who needs a break after six months of doing nothing.

I liked the constant variety and novelty. I dislike games where you just do the same thing over and over. Even when you don't like some induvidual part it's always over soon and there's something new and unexpected ahead.

Especially coming off from MGSV and playing Undertale really made this stand out. The game just throws new mechanics for the bosses and mixes story and gameplay on the fly in ways most big games never do and it's really fun.

I looked at Gungeon gameplay for a while. It seemed pretty fun and it's very similar to the binding of Isaac. But it seems like a game with just that and no story whatsoverer. The neath mechanic of UT was that you could spare the monsters you fight with and that appeals to me more honestly than Gungeon type gameplay.

It does help. /hmg/ dying wasn't solely because of that. Undertale can be very fan-centric, but it also helps that the game isn't mainly or solely for the hotheaded adrenaline junkies.

If it actually tried to be scary, it could be something interesting. There's a lot in Undertale that could be terrifying from a kid's perspective, and the major characters of every region could have a quirk in personality that makes them dangerous.

Hell, even in just Snowdin, Sans stalking you after the ruins like Freddy Krueger could be creepy, brutish oaf Papyrus wanting to play with you but not being mindful of his strength could be unsettling. But instead, you have the one-note head-dog joke and you better like it, because that'll be the poster image for every HorrorTale content.
