It'll disconnect you from the server, yes

It actually goes in phases. It kicks you out, but you can immediately go back in, and part of the new stuff is there. But half of it isn't working properly yet. Log out, log back in, and another bunch of new stuff will have appeared, and some of the old things are now working, but some of the new things aren't yet.

For what it's worth, I think the gamma event started in about an hour from now way back then. So there's still a chance?
