Lad, Research Points, Education and National Focused are your most important techs in early game. Medicine and army techs are important as well, but ignore commerce and most navy techs until later on.

That's not true because 4x has "eXplore" as a necessity of the genre whereas grand strategy does not. However, it's difficult to define grand strategy in a way that would not also describe 4x.
