As long as the protagonist isn't insufferable to the extent, say, Hundred's protagonist is, I'm okay with this.

The sad reality is though that SP is more successful than MG when it comes to obtaining licenses, even if SP is mostly just stealing away translations already done, or translations in process. It's scummy, but it works for them. Plus they do things like Kickstarters to absolve themselves of any financial responsibility.

This is deceptive. SP is managed extremely poorly, whereas MG is managed well and they make smart, safe deals on games because they usually operate in low volume.

SP, meanwhile is willing to pay the heavens to get a license. MG isn't. SP has yet to have a single profitable year thus far, they've been in the red every single year due to chronic mismanagement.

They use Kickstarters to soften the blow, but they still don't make a substantial profit from those because they accept ludicrous deals to aggressively acquire licenses. It's also quite possible that they've been so aggressive with Kickstartering is because they have so many cash-flow issues that it's basically a keep-up game to stay liquid and not have to take on even more debt. The Kickstarters give them some necessary padding in that regard.

Also, keep in mind that they're overstaffed, underqualified, overpaid, and also overspend on even basic shit ike flights (dovac mentioned that he flies first class and all that business when he was starting out). The flying to and from Japan substantially adds up too, instead of having some dedicated on-site personnel to handle it. Their in-house translators suck in every way.

It's literally a trainwreck in motion. Tragic, because they had a ridiculously good position two-three years ago that they've been busting by burning bridges, Phil Fish-level PR, poor management in every sense, and a willingness to publish literally anything, even the worst OELVNs, flooding Steam with awful crap for a quick buck, and killing their own market.

If MG was the one to make the first foray into Steam we'd be in a much better place.

The biggest difference between MG and SP is that one has partners that they work with, and the other just pursues specific games. MG tries to negotiate for their deals that usually involve a percentage of sales going to the original creators, or a cheaper initial fee in combination with that, and aren't above turning down a deal if it's too expensive and pursuing something else. They aggressively try to find stuff that's saleable, but not uber popular unless they can get it for cheap, because popular = expensive. It's literally the opposite 'strategy' as SP, and is far more stable long-term.

SP has have no real platform of their own like MG, have a piss-poor reputation, and even usually outsource the translation because it's cheaper (and more effective) to buy a fanTL then use your inhouse awful ones. They bring literally nothing positive to the table themselves and take a huge cut, so companies like Frontwing are noticing that they can release to the West themselves and eat all the profit themselves with zero licensing costs, and use a Kickstarter for guaranteed profit and advertising.
