There's no way of knowing if the old story was better or worse. I do know the old story was timegated worse than exotics. They had early mobile app shots that showed it notifying you when a new mission was available. That sounds downright awful.

New to Taken King. Just hit 295 light -- does anyone still do normal King's Fall? Seems like everyone just does HM

Just grind strikes for a few hours, you'll hit 310+ pretty easy. Level up your faction/crucible/vanguard for easy highish light loot.

Grind PoE 41 till you get to around 310 and just go on a HM. It shouldn't really take that long, though it is kind of boring.

If you weren't set on a reset day perhaps you could convince people to do a normal mode. I'd do, I'm sure others would too.

People do still do King's Fall, I just helped someone teach someone today. Honestly though you can self-serve up to ~307/310 with strikes and as someone else said your rep packages will contain gear higher light level than you on average.

PoE 41 has matchmaking and is derp easy.
