very poorly, most likely. genetics is still in its infancy compared to mechanical engineering so any game, setting or concept built around the idea is going to be mostly fantasy.

in practice it would most likely be similar to contemporary mechanical engineering game concepts but with materials and resources reskinned and renamed to be biological terms

Darwinbots actually has bioclang. Literally cancer. DNA can be mutated (it's designed on a RPN stack so there's no way it won't run no matter what) and can literally enter death spirals due to errors. Occasionally you'd see a new cell split and then explode into tendrils and new cells and it'd all die. You could also make multi-cellular organisms with creative code through ties. Some were just lines, but they could mutate or contract viral genes and get literal tumors. One of the most common bots on the distributed simulation cloud was a mutated linear multicellular bot that had a ton of viruses contracted and cancer.
