Pontiff GS is best for a DEX build, while Corvian GS is best for a quality build. Unless you really like the WA, the regular GS is worse than both.

At high levels, hollowslayer can get comparable AR to a UGS while also having an actually good GS moveset
The DSGA is only used because it has the biggest numbers and most the people using it don't understand split damage.

No. I've made it so far. I think I'm staying 44 till ng+. I can still invade in smoldering lake and cathedral of the deep.

So far I've gotten it to a third of health with great magic shield cheese. Does GMS give perfect resists? I'm going to throw it on a shield with better stability.
