Guys, I know it goes against all immediate logic, but vanguard is a good first big item for slark.

Yes, his ult passive gives him amazing regen etc, but first of all, you get that at level 6. It's not all that common for slark to get an uncontested lane and smoothly reach level 6. If you do have that and you don't feel like you will want to jungle, then by all means skip vanguard(until you get an abyssal blade of course).

So vanguard isn't just for in lane it also has advantages in the jungle. Slark's passive gives you great immediate regen, while you are not detected by an agressive unit. What slark players usually do is they fight creeps using dark pact then when they reach a substantial health deficit they go hide somewhere or something. This hiding time is not humongous because of shadow dance, but it still adds up. On top of this, while you are at low health, a smoke gank could easily catch you off guard making you lose farming time. Vanguard helps you in both of these areas. Vanguard makes it possible for you to keep farming 100% of the time at near full health and be nearly ungankable at the same time. You might say that vanguard will slow down your farm ability, but this is incorrect since slark relies on dark pact more than anything to farm.

Next is the most obvious reason for early vanguard: survivability in early battles. The hero needs health in a fight, the continuous regen and damage block don't hurt either. The fact that the item builds into abyssal doesn't even need to be stated.

There may be obvious situations where you will have to use your judgement on this, but vanguard holds some important advantages for early game slark that can't be ignored.
