It's also possible that the game decided you're a casual if you died enough times and automatically set the difficulty to baby level

I like how they think that adding a quadrillion enemies to every encounter means high difficulty. I mean, first game isn't even balanced around that at all, all characters are weak and items are not as broken. I don't know how are you supposed to kill even one guy with AC -10 and ~500 hp who can also chug improved healing potions while you have only shitty +2 weapons. They ruined my insane difficulty too with this meat grinder shit. It's like I'm playing diablo all over again.

I suppose they had to somehow justify giving you all these OP weapons out of nowhere.
It's some pretty baffling encounter design even if you consider beamdog to be amateurs, you don't reach this sort of over-reliance on items until well into BG2, which means that if you're doing a continuous playthrough of the series, you spend 2/3 of the time being a weak scrub who gets excited after finding chainmail +2 with a brief interlude of being a demigod at level 9
