The news about ranges seems to be something like:

co-op signs / blues: 10+10% down/up
invasions: 10% down, 20+10% up (purples go up an extra 5%)
area covenant invasions: 20+20% under to 10% over the host's level

He didn't have the stats, it seems. That or split damage and you had 99 humanity on you. Even when fully upgraded, clothes don't offer that much protection in DaS1.

Another possibility is that you are outright lying about numbers. Plate armour is really good against slash damage type, and you really should've been doing more than 200 even if the guy had it unupgraded.
