Virtual Reality General - /vrg/

Welcome to the first (as far as I'm aware) inaugural /vrg/ - Virtual Reality General.

Let us begin with some QnA:
>What is virtual reality? What is a head-mounted display?
Just read this Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_reality
A head-mounted display (HMD) is the headwear responsible for creating a VR environment
>What VR HMDs are available right now?
This general will focus on the enthusiast-level of VR, and doesn’t cover the widely-available methods of VR (ie. Google Cardboard). For enthusiast-level HMDs, the popular ones are: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
>Where can I get one? What games are there? Can I ride a dinosaur? If I die in VR do I die in real life?
I’ll just specify what this general is meant for:
Asking/Answering questions people have about VR.
Talking about VR experiences.
Meeting other people with VR in VR.

Now for the nitty-gritty
>Where is the porn?
Check out /t/’s cataloge and search for “vr porn”. While you might not like the website, /r/oculusnsfw is a good start for that stuff. This is a blubord, don’t post pictures or think that discussing these types of things is a good idea. Keep it to a minimum.
>Where are the games?
Mostly Steam. Link below
>What else?
I dunno, we’ll see how this thread progresses and move on from there.I expect it to be pretty slow. Give me your suggestions for what you think the OP should have.

Hopefully that’s enough information to get the thread going. Here’s some links.

Protip: Use sage in the options field.

You bought into the meme too, lad?

I'm hoping someone makes a free version of virtual desktop. I like the features it has, but half of that shit should be implemented in steam vr and I'm not paying $15 to mirror my monitor.

> What VR games do you really like so far?

Technolust, farlands, chronos, the climb, Pcars, Elite, space pirate trainer, windlands, defense grid, pinball

>VR is a meme
>strapping goggles to your face
>eyestrain
etc. etc.

now all the shitposting is out of the way, I'm enjoying the hell out of audioshield.
Recommended tracks on soundcloud:
Booty Luv - Boogie 2Nite (Seamus Haji Big Love Remix)
Basic Element - Touch You Right Now

non-soundcloud track
Guacamelee - End Boss (the whole guacamelee OST is great)

those are it off the top of my head, gonna get to jack-in to check my history.

I think it's too early for a vr general because almost no one has a headset yet

I'm hoping to dispel that notion by creating this general. The more people who see it the more to talk about it. If it dies then it dies I suppose.

There are plenty on people here who preordered the vice. And now that the 2nd month may phase has passed it should only get more active from here.

If the waifu era was in fact a pipe dream I may kill myself

How is audioshield if you compare it to guitar hero? I heard sometimes the beat is off and it generally has only 2 colors?

I'm tired right now (4:35am here) but I'll check in again tomorrow.
It's kind of sad that all VR discussion is on reddit. Critics will be downvoted and the circlejerk will continue there. Glad that someone is making a general here.

There are already a couple vive experiences being made. Waifu Sex Simulator is a step in the right direction. also yiffalicious

>I heard sometimes the beat is off and it generally has only 2 colors?
There /are/ only two colors, and as far as the beat being off, it sort of depends on where you stand.

It's the same music detection software used in audiosurf, so it's as accurate I'd assume. I do wish there was a level editor to create my own tracks that line-up better. Occasionally you'll get the stray-note out of nowhere, but it's not bad by any means.

The waifu era is real
But there really isn't much to talk about as long as people don't have their headsets
Until then it's like discussing video games you never played

>like discussing video games you never played
so it's just like being on /v/

I was baiting for that exact reply

>these people with holes in their pockets trying really hard to start a conversation
Holy fuck this is cringe worthy.

>Until then it's like discussing video games you never played
I think you're assuming that there aren't that many people with VR headsets yet, but steamspy shows that 60,000+ have tiltbrush.

>people are enjoying something I dont, how fucking dare they!

(You)

The closest thing I can think to compare it to is Audio Voltex

other good youtube channels to check out?
don't even mention markimemer or nathie

I mean Sound Voltex
youtube.com/watch?v=GoH_u8Y13s4

It has you hit individual notes similar to the bottom buttons on the arcade machines, and follow moving streams similar to the knobs for each hand. It only has 2 colors because each color is meant for a specific hand.

It's more like Audiosurf youtube.com/watch?v=Js-lAXTixV4

Back, wanted to recommend a couple more tracks:

aaaaaalexander - turning off
bignic - bleed is pretty great, the whole soundtrack of corporate lifestyle simulator is great.

>read Rift's privacy policy
>"We collect your name, phone number, birthday, email, transaction information"
all standard so far
>"and store communications between users"
>"and information about games, content, or other apps on your system"
>"and information collected through pixels"
wait what the fuck
>"and location information derived from sources such as GPS and wifi networks or cell towers"
>"and information about your physical movements and dimensions"
>>>"oh and this information can't be guaranteed to be 100% secure, we're not responsible if it gets stolen :^)"

>their terms of service also say they have permanent and transferable right over any and all user content that ever touches their servers, even if you delete it

Cyberpunk is real and it's starting right now

facebook and twitter do the same thing m8

and youtube and google

>"and information collected through pixels"
that's a bit worrysome, sounds like it basically means
>"shit that displays to your face, we can see too"

ded

until tomorrow at least, I made the thread a bit late.

I'll make a more timely thread if this one doesn't survive

>800-1000 on a gimmick

Can't make it up

junk vr - best vr

Did you make that? Where did you get the lenses?

Yeah.
Made them out of a plastic bottle, duct tape and water.

hol up, that's pretty fuckin neato.

Did you follow a guide? How well does it work? What is it compatible with? What display are you using?

>How well does it work?
Well, it works. Haven't tried it much, I think I'll have to go out and get actual lenses, making one's right is a huge pain.

>Did you follow a guide?
Trinus VR for tilting, tridef3d or similar for stereo display, moonlight to emulate nvidia shield streaming.

>What is it compatible with?
Any game you can stream though nvidia shield. Although there are a bunch similar software for desktop streaming, so I guess it also will work.

There's tons of games I want to play with stereoscopy, but vorpx only goes so far.

Is there anywhere I should start if I want to enable it on my vive? Mainly a guide to follow.

THE FUTURE

what games work on it?

Any you can render is stereo and stream to your phone.

so how about that massive shitposting thread on /v/? the one about the "veteran" simulation scientist who says no one can use VR for more than a couple minutes?

Seems to be different for person to person. I can spent like an hour or two, before my eyes start to hurt. I only get dizzy if I try to spin. My brother, however, gets barfy almost instantly.

What about that BigScreen beta thing?

So I tried Vive at expo. Deep sea demo was alright, but there was terrible aliasing in zombie shooter. Is it this game's problem or there is always aliasing, and it is just more noticeable in the high contrast environment?

It's just a matter of optimization, it's important to keep fps constant, even at a cost.

>zombie shooter
The Brookhaven Experiment?
Aliasing is somewhat present I guess. Not enough to take you out of it.

That Dolphin VR emulator is pretty fucking nifty. Wish I could eliminate the jittering without having to speed up the games, though.

No, that was Arizona Sunshine.

Oh, I haven't had a chance to play it, there's no demo on steam yet.

doubting this thread will live, but at least 13 people talked about vr. I'll try this later and see if it picks up for different timezones.

It's not about the timezones, it's about barely any people having headsets.

Good job on the op post, will look towards new threads.

Thanks for the bump I guess?
I think it's a mix of both.

Yeah, I got really tired of not having an outlet to talk about vr that wasn't constant shitposting. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

I'll buy a Vive when someone releases a good game for it. The current talent pool making games doesn't look very impressive.

Neat, a VR general, though I don't think there's enough people that have invested in for a decent conversation without the usual /v/ cuck meme banter.

How goes everyone else's experience so far? I've been enjoying the Vive quite a bit. I have an Oculus coming in sometime in June aswell since I already had it on day one preorder, but I expect that will go straight to eBay for some minor profit.

Wishing for something that not only is fun but is intuitive as well. Vertigo was a great demo, but weapon switching is a hassle because it functions like a scroll menu instead of making the trackpad a button menu.

Altspace has the most time I've spent out of everything. Then Audiosurf, Job Simulator, and IKEA VR Experie- jfk, The Lab.

What did you think of Portal Stories: VR? Models looked way bigger than they should have, took me out of it a little.
