Why do teams play puck? Puck's winrate is some of the worst in the entire game at the moment and yet teams keep playing it.

magic stick gives you HP in fights
urn of shadows gives you HP in fights
infused raindrops & PMS give you huge EHP
treads gives you HP in fights

any of these is a better way to tank up your hero so you "punish whoever goes on you and buys time"

urn and bracer give the same +HP. Urn has a disgustingly good active ability that shits out pure damage DoT that disables dagger and free salves and has long range and no animation or mana cost. PMS pretty much doubles your EHP early game.

bracer gives nothing but stats and its stats are mediocre

I go offlane with him. Both solo and duolanes (with a hero who can combo well with you) work pretty well. Supporting can work too

Max stomp (first point in stomp if you're contesting the rune, otherwise spirit) with one point in spirit at lvl2. Then max either the aura or the spirit (aura if enemy has agility heroes or your team has a lot of magic damage)

Get tranquils and soul ring and spam spirit + stomp for the rest of the game.
