Since I have reached the conclussion that my ideal grand strategy game will not be released anytime soon, I started daydreaming about playing GS. That's right, I no longer play strategy games, instead I imagine that I am playing them. And oh boy, this is really fun.
There are just so many options... In my mind, you pretty much play as any contemporary nation. You can play as N.Korea and try to become more liberal, reform financially (over the course of years) ultimately unifying Korea through diplomacy, or remain an absolutist dictatorship and fund extremists to steer shit up in the south, or declare war when the International Community is busy with more severe issues. There is this thing called World Tension (nothing to do with the hoi4 one). When there is not much world tension, the world is very eager to maintain peace, so unprovoked invasions or war crimes will be dealt with very aggressively, when there is a lot of world tension, the world starts getting used to the notion of wars, thus it is easier to do your thing without the UN fucking your shit up. If there is a lot of WT and the UN fails to reduce it several times, its' Authority will get reduced, resulting in eventual disbandment. The UN can always be restored, with the consent of all 10 Great Powers.
My favorite campaign was with South Africa. I picked a globalist focus, that pretty much allowed all Negroes to feel accepted in my society (pan-Africanism). After reforming agriculture, industry, infrastructure and healthcare, I started focusing on military imports and technology. I got to attack some "infamous" nations and soon I dominated the African Union, federalizing several friendly nations up to lower-central Africa. After teaching them how to be humans, I rapidly started feeling like a World Power. Having riled-up a lot of attention with my conquests and being the US rival (emerging GPs are not taken very kindly), they manipulating the global opinion against me and funding discord groups.

2/3 I soon started preparing fortifications in Southern Africa and importing AA and nuclear arms from Russia and China. I even got to spread out my industry and make some shelters. The US soon made their move, 20 divisions deployed in the Ivory Coast, plus 6 allied ones. My intel detected 3 US CVs deployed across my western coast. Shit was getting serious. I barely managed to complete my Balistic missle project before the US declared war and blockaded me, significantly reducing my import capability. As would be expected between nuclear powers, the war declaration was followed by a mutual agreement to not use nuclear weapons and instead fight conventionally. I accepted, since the US nuclear arsenal was way more threatening than mine, but this treaty can be easily revoked if necessary.
Their continential invasion proved to be much stronger than expected, their 20+ divisions broke through my 40+ ones due the crippling effect of their air-force. Being out in the plains, our army group was hopeless against the overwhelming US airforce. While our Russian imported jets were exceptional, both the larger quantity and better air-tradition of the US meant that we were to tread carefully. The first battle was a complete disaster, with us losing over 50 thousand troops (30 thousand dead or wounded, 20 thousand captured) and 30 jets, while them losing barely 2,000 troops and 4 jets.
Despite the first ominous battle, the US airforce failed to achieve her goals of completely crippling and overwhelming our military capabilities, like in Iraq. Flights deep in our country were thwarted by our overwhelming investment to AA technology and small scale dogfights proved to be effective at intercepting US jets. Our army, now deployed in a hilly environment and dugged it, while supported by our nearby forts and AA weapons, was in a largely better position. Within the next 3 days, the US lost over 60 jets! while we lost 40.

3/3 That isn't to say that we got away with it though. US troops still broke through the east part of the 2nd front, more or less forcing us to abandon a large portion of our land and retreating into our 1st line of heavy fortifications. On the meanwhile 3 major amphibious assaults, involving 3 US fleets with one carrier each and 120,000 men took place across our Western coast. Armed with special warheads, from our 10 ballistic strikes towards the CVs only one succeeded, but it was enough to force the ship to retreat for repairs. Only the northmost invasion succeded in making significant gains, with the middle one being repelled and the south one being cancelled due to the lack of air support.
Bah, this will take hours to fully type out. Let's say that as I was starting to get my shit fucked up, I used nuclear strikes against their armed forces and they retaliated. Soon I started also targeting their own cities, and even got a succesful strike on Washington DC. With me having my force completely crippled, half a million US soldiers deployed in the south-east of my country, having over 50% of my population dead and most of my land irradiated and with major attempts to overthrow the government, I got saved in the last minute; a Russia intervened on a somewhat exhausted USA, unleashing half their nuclear arsenal on them and invading Alaska.
The US withdrew from my land and was forced to cede Alaska to Russia and pay me 5 billion $ as reparations, while I lost a significant part of my African gains due to the unpopularity of the war. I am currently trying to rebuild my country and get rid of that fucking nuclear fallout. Don't use nuclear weapons lads, it's hell on earth. Pic related: Red+Pink was my country before the war, Pink is the land I lost after the war, Blue were the US aligned countries, Yellow were non-aligned ones. X's are the fortifications and trenches, blue arrows are the major US invasions.
Daydreaming about playing GS sure is fun though..

The only place I can think of where something comparable to "actual" communism was tried was the Spanish Civil War when anarchists and syndicalists took over huge areas of catalonia, and even then it didn't last long because the Socialist/communist Spanish government did everything in its power to suppress them. Capitalism and Democracy work because they don't require an imaginary world to remain stable, I could as easily argue "actual" capitalism has never been tried, but it has, and it works, and governments interfere and make some parts better and some parts worse but overall even with 'special interests' influencing it capitalism is a functioning, self-sustaining and self-perpetuating system which anarchism in any form is not.
