Yeah, I also get this same bug, and I am on the same location as the server. What I do is to actually run toward the platform the elevator would stop on. In your case just continue running forward as soon as you step on the elevator.

What I ended up having to do was jumping at a precise time to launch myself up as the elevator was ascending. Nothing else would work. This is probably the glitchiest shit I've ever played and I got Spore shortly after release.

With the state the game is currently on, I think that particular glitch is one of the many issues the devs should be least concerned about.

if you want aoe, just do covering fire. penetration is a straight line and you can't move it, plus it takes a while compared to covering fire.
