Right and wrong. Islam in its first 600 years was not static, it was very fluid, it allowed thought and encouraged it, it was a changing faith. This was the concept of "ijtihad", literally, "independent reasoning". After 6 centuries a change in doctrine occured, a very dramatic one, called "Taqlid", literally, "to follow". Under this concept it was believed that everything was figured out already and nothing needed to be figured out anymore, just follow the ancestors and the past. This killed Islam and any hopes of reform (until the modern day via western thought).
