The Church has always been a mess, at some times and in some places more or less pure. Was there no Apostolic faith before 325, when we finally established the Trinitarian faith? No. Nor was the Gospel unheard of before the Reformers and their heirs confessed it officially. The Reformers didn't want to start a new faith. They wanted to peel away the unbiblical and un-apostolic accretions that had been added.
