Does Mushi have slowdown or is my framerate dropping?

Yes, Mushi has slowdown. All Cave games (aside from Dangun Feveron, to my knowledge) have slowdown when the screen gets filled; the slowdown is one of their main gimmicks alongside relatively complex scoring systems.

Generally, 1.5 will be a bit easier to play unless you're playing 1.5 MAX. The Arrange mode is very similar to normal maniac, but you start out much stronger than you can get in normal, you can switch between M, W, and S as you wish, and it has (an easier version of) the true last boss from normal ultra. In arrange, you will also autobomb if you are hit with bombs in stock, but the autobomb will use all of your bombs.

tfw bought a stick, but it's a Sanwa JLF and I have no intention of using it for shmups

If your stick is moddable, you can just swap the joystick with a Seimitsu one with ease. I did the same and the stick got way better.

Is it really much of a difference?

I honestly prefer my jlf to my seimitsu

The joystick feels more precise and doesn't feel loose. I installed an LS-32 and I had no problems with the stick since then.
