You can also have kickass custom themes for your 3DS with CFW, plus some nice options for homebrew (especially for Pokemon). It's not 100% about piracy with CFW you know.

But if I want to play the pirated version, I will need a CFW, which comes with the risk of bricking my system and a shitload of work compared to loading HANS with the homebrew launcher.

Realistically, no it doesn't. As long as you follow the instructions you're golden. Fuck, most of the stuff you can get wrong won't brick you, there are like 2-3 things you need to be sure to get right in order to not brick and they are very obvious.

I understand your concern, but it's so simple that it's really hard to brick unless you actively try to, and even then it's not the easiest thing in the world.

I agree with the other anons here, it's very hard to get bricked unless you're not following instructions carefully. I've done around 10 3dses and no bricks so far, variety of 3ds, n3ds and 2ds

I'm really pissed i can't fucking understand how gba agb_firm works under luma3ds! someone can enlight me? i've a emunand 10.3\ sysnand 9.0 (unlinked) and everytime i try to install the patched cia 0004013800000202 it says to me it's already installed (pic related). So after that i try to install the vc cia of gba game (nand + emunand via FBI) it works but when i let it start it says to me "An error has occured..." Am i doing some shit wrong?

Just another quick question out of curiosity - how exactly cfw differs from official firmware on 3ds? I mean, it is just the same firmware with removed anti-piracy checks and left backdoors to gain additional controls or the changes go even deeper?

Also, in case of installing a9lh, when you "link" emuNAND with sysNAND, does it basically replace the sysNAND content with emuNAND or take image of its content, modify it and then paste back, but with changed booting part, so it forces console to autoboot the SD card firmware instead of this left in internal console memory? Some guides mention how you can make 3ds boot into unmofidied official firmware with a9lh installed, so I assumed it might be like the second option.

i know, well i kinda understood that, but still, even if the gba vc cias are installed on sysnand and emunand, when i try to boot the games on emunand it dosent work (black screen and "an error has occured") and if i boot sysnand i cant see them but i know the cia are installed...

Bricked my shit up flashing by trying to update using the N3DS 9.2 firmware instead of the O3DS firmware. Wasn't paying attention and clicked the wrong one. It was on 6.0 firmware so I tried to update from there.

Guess it's hardmod time now.

Yeah, it looks fairly simple. The USB card reader and the wire bundle recommended in the gbatemp tutorial for the hardmod is $15 shipped on Amazon.

You need to extract its content first. romfs and exefs
Use ctrtool and decrypt9 for that.

Basically, before the system is even loaded, you've got something running to patch the system to let you do all the wonderful homebrew things you do. It's unfixable by nintendo because you're running your code before their code ever gets a chance to execute.

Since you wrote to your system, certain files are missing the keys
Therefore you need to load them from your SD card
that's why you can boot menuhax+emuNAND without SD just fine into sysNAND. nothing was overwritten

Just inject a pre-a9lh sysNAND backup and you're back to 9.2 without CFW
