I don't care if I sound /pol/, but it was the blacks. Literally all the places in the US with the highest crime rates have a black majority / significant population.

I'm no right winger but I always figured it was the result of hippies gone bad. They spent their youth on a decade long drug binge but then their revolution failed and they hit their 30s with no skills and a bad habit.

One thing that made the civil rights movement of the late 50s and 60s possible was a very liberal supreme court. In addition to the various desegregation cases, the Supreme Court put a lot of restrictions upon police's ability to monitor and arrest people, as wide latitude for law enforcement had left black people vulnerable, in addition to the various actions against socialists and communists from the late 1910s through the early 1950s.

Police generally gave up on minor crime, like prostitution, vandalism, petty theft, etc and focused only on hard crime, like murders. With the return of more conservative policies (and a supreme court and federal judiciary generally since the late 80s), like broken windows policing in the 90s, we have seen a drop in crime in the cities.

This isn't the whole story, as obviously economics plays a decent part, but it's definitely a factor; police had pretty wide discretion to stop and frisk, etc., up through the 1960s.

It's actually pretty complex, but here's the basic gist of it. Nixon gets a lot of shit, but it's amazing he was able to keep the malaise at bay for as long as he did, and the economy from completely imploding, before it fully set in with Carter and the recession. Poor Carter was another fucking Hoover: a guy who got shit on because of things completely out of his control. His only flaw, imo, was his handling of the Iranian hostage crisis.

NFA was the first federal law but there were plenty of states that issued gun control laws prior to the rising crime rates of the late 1960s. Black codes in the South made it illegal for blacks to own any kind of weapon. The 1879 Army and Navy Law in Tennessee prohibited civilians from owning any type of handgun except large Colt Army or Navy style revolvers, which were prohibitively expensive for the majority of blacks and poor whites.

New York passed the Sullivan Act in 1911, which required licenses to own handguns. NYPD very rarely issues those licenses to people who aren't rich, famous or ex-cops. The gun Bernie Goetz used to kill four men in 1984 was unlicensed, for instance. Legally carrying a handgun for protection is something that New Yorkers haven't been used to for a long time. It could perhaps be argued that the crime rates of the late '60s-80s in the City could have been lower if more people were armed but it doesn't explain why they were so high in the first place.

A somewhat interesting aside is that handguns would have been NFA items if it weren't for Karl Frederick, then leader of the NRA. Although he managed to convince legislators to change the bill, he was personally against carrying on a day-to-day basis.

There is a period of great migration for American blacks. Most blacks never left the South. That's where the overwhelming majority of America's black population still is and has always been. But with the collapse of working opportunities many blacks moved out of the south en mass to get factory jobs in the industrial north and west.

I don't know if this lines up with the time periods of this thread because I forget when it happened, but it's definitely a thing. Before a certain period you would almost never find a black man in Michigan of Illinois.

Yes but whites didn't let burn down their neighborhoods and then expect blacks to rebuild them. That's why there were burnt down buildings in the Bronx for 30-40 years. People got tired of cleaning up their messes

The Great Migration of blacks leaving the South was roughly 1910-1970. It's usually delineated into two phases. The second one occurred around the US entry into WW2 and involved greater numbers of people moving out of the South as well as the inclusion of California as a destination.

I've been hearing explanations of this phenomenon for a long time and for me the primary reason has always been that the raison d'etre for these big cities was industry jobs that in the 60s started being outsourced to robots, suburbs, and other countries. I just figured if everyone was carrying, crime would be a lot harder to pull off.
