What happened to American cities in the late 1960s and 1970s? New York City went from relatively safe to very dangerous in the span of 10 years and other American cities like Philadelphia and Chicago followed.

The end of the golden age of capitalism. Scarcity became a problem. People started to become alienated, completely detached from society.

Leaded gasoline. I'm serious, look it up. That explains the crime bump from 1960-1995. There was a similar bump from about 1890 to 1940, from lead paint.

I guess we're in a new golden age now then, since that crime trend is over.

Civil Rights Act happened.

The 2008 financial crisis surely must've led to increased crime rates again then, right? Oh wait, they've been going down through the whole recession.

niggers happened.

Pamphlet given out to arriving tourists in NYC by police officers in 1975, page 1

Don't forget the one that fell the furthest: Detroit. It was the wealthiest city in the U.S. and nearly overtook Philadelphia for 3rd largest city in the country during the 1950s with a population of nearly 2 million in the city proper. Detroit's problems stem more from moving manufacturing jobs first to other states then to other countries, on top of having the same issues with "white flight" that all American cities had. Now it's the poorest major city with a population between 600k and 700k in the city proper, though it appears to finally be stabilizing.

I don't care if I sound /pol/, but it was the blacks. Literally all the places in the US with the highest crime rates have a black majority / significant population.

>inb4 no, it was poverty

Nope. Blacks earning 50k and above still have a higher murder rate than even the poorest whites.

I'm no right winger but I always figured it was the result of hippies gone bad. They spent their youth on a decade long drug binge but then their revolution failed and they hit their 30s with no skills and a bad habit.

One thing that made the civil rights movement of the late 50s and 60s possible was a very liberal supreme court. In addition to the various desegregation cases, the Supreme Court put a lot of restrictions upon police's ability to monitor and arrest people, as wide latitude for law enforcement had left black people vulnerable, in addition to the various actions against socialists and communists from the late 1910s through the early 1950s.

Police generally gave up on minor crime, like prostitution, vandalism, petty theft, etc and focused only on hard crime, like murders. With the return of more conservative policies (and a supreme court and federal judiciary generally since the late 80s), like broken windows policing in the 90s, we have seen a drop in crime in the cities.

This isn't the whole story, as obviously economics plays a decent part, but it's definitely a factor; police had pretty wide discretion to stop and frisk, etc., up through the 1960s.

>*a conservative supreme court and federal judiciary

Its because of racism

Civil Rights happened, which to niggers translated as "I can finally act like the crazy fucking animal I always was oh thank tha lawd" and then the murder and violent crime rate doubles, there are various drug epidemics, and the city starts to look like OP's pic related.

Niggers are pretty much cancer in human form.

So the population of blacks exploded in the 60s? No.

The Baby Boomers grew up.

Aging hippies don't become violent criminals, they get white color jobs.

It's literally this.

>Nope. Blacks earning 50k and above still have a higher murder rate than even the poorest whites.

Is that including ones that make quick fortunes selling crack in the ghetto, or only ones that earn a 50k or higher salary at a legal job? Sounds made up tbqh

A bunch of things and this is in no way a timeline:
>economy staggered by Vietnam becomes even more staggered once the monetary influx of Vietnam stops abruptly
>cities can't employ everyone who migrated during and after WWII, coloreds are the first to get cut, whites quickly after
>LBJs Great Society places further strain on the economy and cities, especially on blacks
>oil crisis looms beginning in the early 70's and only worsens as the decade goes on which makes industrial economy almost untenable
>country as a whole chafes due to several factors and the malaise of the 1970's sets in and makes everything worse

It's actually pretty complex, but here's the basic gist of it. Nixon gets a lot of shit, but it's amazing he was able to keep the malaise at bay for as long as he did, and the economy from completely imploding, before it fully set in with Carter and the recession. Poor Carter was another fucking Hoover: a guy who got shit on because of things completely out of his control. His only flaw, imo, was his handling of the Iranian hostage crisis.

This is the most likely reason unlike memeshit asspulls like this guy is trying to post:

Yep, leaded gas, totally. Case closed. Its not the niggers and drugs, oh god ANYTHING but that.

this

In cities, yes.

>lmao it wasn't a complex combination of dozens of factors it was just lead
Simplistic retard

>doesn't possess enough IQ points to recognize obvious irony
Not even that user

They moved to cities in search for jobs which led to white flight.

overpopulation is the root of all problems

There were plenty of problems back when the planet wasn't populated though.

they banned drugs and moved poor blacks into government created ghettos.

yes I know. sorry meant of modern problems. more people bumping into each other and more shit going down. more people, more possibility of an issue occuring

Niggers, what are you fucking stupid

Drug wars

M8 I've seen so much dumb shit on here I can't be ever sure

Like to send them all to Liberia

>What happened to American cities in the late 1960s and 1970s?

They were fairly dangerous then too. They just looked nice.

But this though.

>but muh correlation doesn't equal causation

Except it's demonstrably the case that lead causes aggressive behavior.

Most of the ones making 50k are corrupt civil servants. Blacks LOVE a government job.

So when you consider that "successful" blacks aren't successful because of entrepreneurial spirit or education but because " Yo I be da Healf Inspectda an sheeeit", it shouldn't be surprising that they still have a high crime rate.

End of segregation and hippies

gun control made it a bitch to be legally capable of defending yourself

This is nonsense and it's depressing that you're probably being serious.

It turns out that black people don't like being beaten and arrested for no reason. It also turns out white people are scared of black people and in denial.

Do you think this is true or are you making a joke? Gun control wasn't significant until the 90s.

The Warren Court.

>The ’34 Act was the first federal law to seriously curb American’s Second Amendment rights, Rusnak said. In one instance, the National Firearms Act put in place a licensing fee of $200 for each fully automatic weapon, pricing them out of reach for a country where the average yearly income was under $2,000. The act also banned the importation of fully automatic weapons.

I'm sure there were other broader cultural trends that anticipated where we are today, where owning a gun much less carrying one is considered barbaric by a huge portion of the population.

Obviously there were other perhaps more important factors such as economics, but I was just putting this one out there.

So in retaliation they start committing violent crimes on innocent people? Sounds like typical niggers to me

>gun control wasn't a serious thing until the 90's
Literally wrong, there's been pushes for gun control since at least the 20's, and it really ramped up during the 60's and 70's, with the GCA of '68, and '86.

Nah nigga much nastier shit happened with less people in the past. This current world is actually at it's best state yet.

The 90s were when the tide started to turn, you nonce.

In 1990, there were only two states that allowed concealed carry.

Now, all states are legally required to have at least may issue laws.

...

I frequently make unfounded assertions on Veeky Forums because it's easier than doing research.

But none of the states that matter would be shall issue until the 2010s, except maybe Pennsylvania.

NFA was the first federal law but there were plenty of states that issued gun control laws prior to the rising crime rates of the late 1960s. Black codes in the South made it illegal for blacks to own any kind of weapon. The 1879 Army and Navy Law in Tennessee prohibited civilians from owning any type of handgun except large Colt Army or Navy style revolvers, which were prohibitively expensive for the majority of blacks and poor whites.

New York passed the Sullivan Act in 1911, which required licenses to own handguns. NYPD very rarely issues those licenses to people who aren't rich, famous or ex-cops. The gun Bernie Goetz used to kill four men in 1984 was unlicensed, for instance. Legally carrying a handgun for protection is something that New Yorkers haven't been used to for a long time. It could perhaps be argued that the crime rates of the late '60s-80s in the City could have been lower if more people were armed but it doesn't explain why they were so high in the first place.

A somewhat interesting aside is that handguns would have been NFA items if it weren't for Karl Frederick, then leader of the NRA. Although he managed to convince legislators to change the bill, he was personally against carrying on a day-to-day basis.

White flight out of the inner cities and into the suburbs. The niggers couldn't manage to keep the inner cities afloat without them and creating gangs as we know them today.

People got tired of cleaning up the messes that blacks made and left them to rot

No whites were moving out before that because the cost of living is cheaper in suburbs

This looks like a desperate attempt by the police to get more funding

Redlining

There is a period of great migration for American blacks. Most blacks never left the South. That's where the overwhelming majority of America's black population still is and has always been. But with the collapse of working opportunities many blacks moved out of the south en mass to get factory jobs in the industrial north and west.

I don't know if this lines up with the time periods of this thread because I forget when it happened, but it's definitely a thing. Before a certain period you would almost never find a black man in Michigan of Illinois.

You are just begging the question though let alone the fact that the cities OP listed had huge crime rates for their entire history at that point.

Yes but whites didn't let burn down their neighborhoods and then expect blacks to rebuild them. That's why there were burnt down buildings in the Bronx for 30-40 years. People got tired of cleaning up their messes

The Great Migration of blacks leaving the South was roughly 1910-1970. It's usually delineated into two phases. The second one occurred around the US entry into WW2 and involved greater numbers of people moving out of the South as well as the inclusion of California as a destination.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Bronx#1970s:_.22The_Bronx_is_burning.22

Explains it pretty well and it's an accumulation of many issues though.

In NYC so many buildings were utter shit because the landlords and owners refused to do any maintenance or upkeep of the property and still bumped up rent for businesses and residents alike.

Globalization, de-industrialization then whitey-flight

Thanks for the info.

I've been hearing explanations of this phenomenon for a long time and for me the primary reason has always been that the raison d'etre for these big cities was industry jobs that in the 60s started being outsourced to robots, suburbs, and other countries. I just figured if everyone was carrying, crime would be a lot harder to pull off.

Johnson's Great society ruined all our inner cities.

Welfare state expansion. Higher percentage of children raised in single mother households.

In 1960, about 150 years after the end of slavery, illegitimacy in the black community was at 25%. 30 years later, in 1990, it was at 70%. Today it is over 75%.

Wouldn't this mean that crime rates should be higher today than the '70s? Why the discrepancy there?
