What's the best summary of what happened in MG1 and MG2? I'm playing MGS1 right now and am confused as to who Gray Fox is

he was big boss's most trusted lieutenant and the only man to receive the code name fox. he was sent in to outer heaven before snake in MG1 but was captured. in MG2 he came back as an enemy and fought snake as metal gear's pilot and later hand to hand in a mine field. he also rescued naomi at one point.

I liked the time when posting emblems and raifus was a thing.

Nah, it's fine. there's not that much variety in customization to make it 'a thing' again anyway, it was short lived, but it was nice at the time.
