Also, the iron shortage problem is a vanilla thing IIRC, mostly due to those insanely high iron requirements to build/upgrade a factory.

Just the regular, historical western powers industrializing is enough to make iron's demand skyrocket with those building requirements.
Building factories with raw minerals (which is what iron is supposed to represent) makes no sense anyways.

Governments that are more then one ruler are very difficult to model properly in CK2.

Conclave, despite being a shitty expansion actually offers the framework that could mimic it the closest with its council system. Would take a good amount of work on the modders front.

I scripted Odoacer's invasion, in the current version due to the way that his invasion works most titles that would make sense to reform a roman republic ( Aka the reskinned merchant republics in Italy ) lose their land after he invades.

A play through might be possible if you adjust Odoacer's CB so that it protects the vassals like it does the king of Dalmatia.

There's a bug at the moment where the roman republic converts to feudal after a day in game so for now not an option.
Why not just play the 480 start? The republic still exists but you're a vassal under Odoacer (after that shitty bug is fixed anyway)
