There's nothing inherently helping him survive in a fight, only the shield regen after the fight has already ended. He's easily the squishiest character in the game, far more than Tracer.

It heavily depends on the rest of your team. They need to be heroes that can pump out the DPS and they have to be players that can actually aim. Plus one tank.
It's probably the strongest type of team but it's a lot to ask of pubs rather than "one support and five whatevers".
