with covops skill below IV, astero has better scan bonuses
with covops skill at IV or V, buzzard has better scan bonuses, as well as one more midslot for more scanning upgrades

astero has much higher tank and dps, and is much more expensive.

they are equivalent for hacking, so if all you're going to do is relic and data sites without npcs, buzzard is cheaper.

astero is able to kill other explorers, which (like in Rust) can be a faster way to get explo loot than actually hacking things. also it can run certain combat anoms and up to 3/10 ded complexes for certain races of pirates. The buzzard cannot do these things.

incidentally (this is tangential to your question but just so you don't think the astero has a strict superset of the buzzard's abilities) if you are *only* scanning, like if you live in wormholes and just have to get the chain opened today, the buzzard is considerably better than the astero.

So I've been exploring for about 5 hours total. I have never discovered a single data or relic site in a system, only wormholes/combat sites/gas clouds. Of the WHs I've found, 9/10 of them have tons of people and shit inside which makes it impossible to proceed without a cloak. Of the 1/10th remaining WHs, only about a third have data/relic sites inside, and only half of those aren't sleeper sites.

And some of those non-sleeper sites are apparently too hard to hack for a new player?

So when does exploration get fun?

It's all been 0.6-0.9sec though. I'm not sure if I should be going lower without a cloak? There is very little direction in the game.

highsec data/relic are shit. There is huge competition for them as well.

If you are brand new, you will get killed in low/null/WH, but the only way to git gud is to learn by doing. Learn to use dscan, learn to scout throoughly before hacking. Even without a cloak, you are relatively safe if you do everything right. The only thing a covops cloak saves you from that is sue to kill you in a non cloaky is bubbles.
