Yes, the Fragment Ifrit fight is damn near impossible without full Fire resist on your party.
Other resist accessories can be useful too, but only grab them if you've got the extra greens.

You can use this table to determine what to get. The +30 ones are definite must haves, and then the rest is up to you.

You have like all month to get them anyway, so don't sweat it.

Hero Souls and MC1s aren't super hard to get, so go ahead unless you only have a couple.
It's good to keep at least one on you in case you get a good relic for someone you don't have.

Honestly I knew very little about the games, and decided to just bite into it and buy XIII.
After I played that, decided I loved it completely, then moved onto VII. Highly recommend the series. I'm also someone who hasn't played JRPGs before.
