I've been playing for 6 months now like every day and still had to buy a lot of mats, like I only had around 160~ of each t6 mat apart from blood which I had two stacks of.

GW2 has preened its playerbase very well. It's quite nearly exclusively sustained by whales who simply have no taste and no money sense. Expansions just drive the wave of income back up in the interim. The only reason anet would aggressively pursue some sort of regular (yearly or so) would be because the game is pretty ded population wise which worries the publisher.

So I decided to pick this game up again. I've been leveling an Elementalist to 25

I see that buying the expansion would bump my character up to 80 automagically.

What are the downsides of this? What would I be doing at max level?

You'll get bored faster since the first run-up to 80 is the most fun one. But you'll be able to dungeon, fractal and WvW properly with the skip.

Well I have two 80s but I'm not terribly interested in being a Guardian or a Engineer at this point. I did level them up at a time so far in the past I can only remember parts of what I did
