Something you need to consider about PS1 conts is that the devs only needed to worry about terrain since all the bases were copy pasta.
In PS2, their design philosophy means there are a shit ton of bases they need to design, each of them individual, barring facilities (and even then there are differences between individual facilities).
It's a lot more work then a PS1 cont would take

But nothing prevents people going back to normal FPS. The truth is that the best Planetside has to offer are balanced 48-96 fights. But most fights are not those. Overpopping is the most effective way to win, and while one faction has all its pop spawncamping a base waiting for it to cap, another faction is doing the same somewhere else. Some bases are also impossible to take with 50% pop, like biolabs and towers with A point inside.

The normal FPS market is also bad atm. Rarely do servers go up to 64 players, if that.

It's a great metric to see if someone is actually good at fps games or just camps spawn rooms with ESF and a Prowler

The problem is that it often devolves into campfests, moreso if the maps are intentionally designed to be standoffs. Battlefield 3/4s metro is popular for pubs but the imbalance shows. If it's gonna be 96v96, it needs to have a fairly large map per match (like 2-3 zones in planetside)

The easily controllable recoil makes the CARV feel more accurate than it is. Its cone of fire is still insane. It's not a "hold LMB for chain headshots while moving" gun.
