Honestly, as long as you've actually having a discussion and not just flamebaiting / trolling you won't have a problem but I can definitely see someone from your perspective viewing it as a hugbox that censors opinions.
In summary: Debate is fine and happens a lot, but flamebaiting and trolling isn't allowed.
However, this is kind of irrelevant, since the podcast is just 3-4 redditors talking about the subject, so how discussion occurs on Reddit itself doesn't have much to do with it. What really matters is how much you like the individuals speaking. I was not fond of them because they talked too much about learning Japanese.
Depends on the subreddit and the mods, the place is too big to say it is or isn't a hugbox, you'll find all sorts of communities. There's a lot more variety than here and I'm sure some places are similar to this one.
