Both Sony and MS are doing mid-gen upgrades for their consoles. The older models will continue to sell and coexist alongside the new, more powerful ones. Games will have to run in two modes and support both models.
The focus seems to be on supporting console VR headsets rather than forcing you to replace your current box

And the Magnum off spawn only made it easier.
