Real talk here, I read books but the Western world can't write books anymore. Or rather, the publishing industry is very corrupt. 21st century fiction is usually loaded with the authors political views, SJW-ism and just generally plainly bad books with shallow mainstream appeal, or rather, that's the only ones that are allowed to get published. See the disaster that was Hugo awards. So yeah, if you want to read books your only options are older ones.

This problem doesn't really exist with contemporary Japanese fiction, especially since VN/LN are fairly niche. Cool stuff is coming out every year, authors are allowed to get creative etc etc. That's the real thing I like about them. Not really related to your argument, but I kind of wanted to get this off for some time now.

Asagi - Mostly focused on violent/rough treatment of the girls, tentacles, pretty hardcore stuff.
Yukikaze - focused on corruption and mindbreak, most sex is just a fat old man or a customer making the girl feel so good her morals fade and she gets addicted.

Are there any VNs where you have to do something really meta like turn off a character's voice in order to proceed through into route or something like that?

I'm on Episode 4 of Umineko, and I don't know if I can take this pacing anymore.
I love the mystery aspect of it. I love the interaction between Battler and Beatrice. I love theorizing how it could have been done and seeing how my theories hold up. I love the way it seems to close up every possibility of a mundane explanation until suddenly something clicks that opens a hole in this seemingly impenetrable mystery.

But the supernatural scenes and future crap feel like such slog to get through. The supernatural scenes go on for way too long, and I have to believe that they're just fake shit trying to misdirect me, because what's the point of ANY of this game if I'm going to accept magic is real? So what's the point to even reading them? And the future stuff feels so disconnected from the rest of the game, I can't bring myself to feel interested in it. I just feel like taping down CTRL during the parts where Ange is getting bullied and being delusional, because none of it feels like matters to the rest of the story.
And now right when things are getting interesting again, Battler breaks down and it cuts to another damn future scene. I feel strongly tempted to just delete the game and look up the summary on a wiki. I like the content, but the piecemeal delivery is frustrating me beyond belief.

What do I do, /vn/? Can anyone say something to convince me it's worth it to keep going? Or is it something where if I'm not enjoying those parts, I should just give up and accept this isn't for me?

Wish there were some other meat VNs like the one where a character starts talking to the player and kills the MC when you don't do her route.

Shame that's the only good part of that VN. Or at least that's what /vn/ told me.
