I recently started playing EOIV, my first Etrian, since it got a nice price reduction.

Struggling a bit in the 2nd Strata. It seems there are some random encounters which either end in one turn, or go horribly south for me, with enemies sleeping/paralysing my entire party then doing absurd physical damage. It feels basically entirely luck based.

Does anybody have any general tips? Party comp is NS, F, L in front, RM, M in the back.

Don't go at night.

I've paid little attention to the day/night cycle so far, other than for one quest. Thanks for the hint, I'll try to avoid nocturnal explorations until I'm a bit more confident.

I don't think that EO5 has shit portraits.
Just that every other game in the series has a better set.

Except for EO4. I had a lot of trouble to get a team because all the portraits were boring or outright bad looking. I even had to pick males because of that (no, scruffy wasn't one of them).

EO4 was still leagues better.

3>5>1&2>4

3 has the most consistently good portraits, 5 has the most portraits that I consider outstandingly good, but with a mix of mediocre ones. 1&2 have more plain portraits, but still kinda charming. 4's portraits are mostly just mediocre.

The only good portraits from 4 are Bandanna, Scruffy, Brown Fortress, The Black and Blonde Imperials, and a couple of the Arcanists. The rest are okay at best and boring at worst. The only portrait worse than Shota Monk is the Brown Landsknecht.

The only difference is their skin colour (which can be edited, so it's pretty much a moot point), eye shape and hair style, and their hairstyles are more or less identical.
Female necromancers are hugely different, perhaps the most different two same sex class portraits ever have been in the series.

What's the best way to late game grind in the original etrian odyssey? I've beat primevil before but I just wanted to try out a new party. I've heard about the treefrogs for grinding but it's taking a long time, any better late game stratigies?
