How do I figure out where to buy land? I have 15k but don't understand how you're supposed to know where to buy it. The last place I bought a dye land I lost money on it and had to sell it.

Go to one of the Nord starting towns and talk to the guildmaster. First see how much you can get with the dyeworks, but say "No, that's not economical for me" and check everything else. If dyeworks makes you the best money out of everything, get the dyeworks.

If you're playing a mod with economic changes, then do not buy a dyeworks in every city or you'll crash the market.

ideally you buy land when a town is conquer--it is at it's lowest price then
but if the city IS conquered, then that likely means it can be conquered again (like a center nation gets reconquered over and over), so land value dips over and over

so buy anywhere you can afford dawg, it's not as "harsh" as dyeworks/etc. can be
