A skill level 10 sword without mlb is equal to a skill level 3 gun. It's actually a bit worse since it also has less attack but you get the idea. It's not completely useless since the hp is useful too but you really have to skill it up. Using and skilling up one is fine since you can also uncap it right away with extra copies.

In a calculator, a Sk10 3LB sword works out about the same as a 0LB Sk10 gun, but with a small HP boost.

Depending on your pool and how you play, it may or may not be worth it. If you're sub-50, you're probably better off with a gun, though. HP doesn't matter as much until you're trying to solo content and sometimes that extra 1000HP can make the difference between getting double/triple auto'd by a boss and surviving/dying.
