Supreme Ruler Ultimate is a better modern-day grand strategy IMO; Superpower has a really weak combat system, the economy has some functions that actually don't do anything, and the AI is annoyingly passive.

I feel like one of the things that's really badly represented by HoI4 is just how hesitant countries were to go to war post-WW1. Everyone remembered the great war, and nobody was looking for more war. Having that represented would lead to much more real interactions between nations.
