I feel Jak 2's story problem came from it being in a period where to be considered "good" it had to be "edgy". Gameplay was also really difficult with it's low health and unforgiving checkpoints I'm looking at you, turret tank mission. and the cars were stupidly heavy and blew up too easily.
Jak 3 really got it's shit together though. Story's a bit better, it fixed the difficulty problems from Jak 2 and the weapons are a BIT better.
Jak X is Jak X, I guess.
