Basically. You could also just grab a few good companions and focus on leveling yourself and them up to get to a high level so that trainer is useful. Remember that castles and towns give you T2 troops instead of T1 peasants (though those T2 troops are on the path towards infantry instead of archers/skirmishers, if you care about that).

I would also suggest editing your module.ini if you haven't, because VC decided to change the XP rates for you and your companions.

It's gets okayish for bumping your T2 troops to T3, but that's it. Beyond that and you need to keep hitting higher and higher levels with trainer being more and more useless.

So I'm trying to rescue a lord from a neutral city (Jelkala), no quest involved. I've already had him stay behind me, and I've taken out all the guards that rushed me, but nothing is happening. Are there more guards hidden or something? There doesn't seem to be any way of getting up on the ramparts, if there are any guards up there.

So long as you're stuck in the city, there is a guard or two left.
