My theory is that CMO was KISS porting CM3D as closely as possible to the Unity engine, which required a fuckton of work. They did some graphics enhancements and took advantage of the engine during this. Then, when CMO was failing due to bad design and always online, they overhauled it a bit with new textures, new shaders, and a new UI and called it CM3D2. Some of the stages (stage, outdoor pool) between CMO and CM3D2 look virtually identical. So, they've managed to get some serious mileage out of their assets.

The cool part is that CM3D2 is a big success with a huge community (for an eroge), so hopefully KISS will build something from scratch for CM3D3 or whatever instead of recycling assets and it will look awesome

That's what I'm saying. At certain specific angles and lighting, CM3D2 looks like CM3D. They didn't make a completely new game from the ground up.

Does anyone actually use the presets from no-info.no-ip.info/cm3d2/ ? I tried a couple and they required mods that I don't have, and I can't find any sort of information about what mods are required by a preset. Am I missing something obvious here?

Like you say, some of them (maybe most of the new ones) use mods, and the cards don't tell you which mods they use, unlike the AA2 db where cards usually specify every single mod you need to get that card working and sometimes even have mega links to obscure mods or shit not in the HEXA packs

I can get closer to that picture's lighting effects by modifying the shadow texture and setting it with AlwaysColorChangeEx. The shadow color in seems to be less saturated so perhaps they used a different method.
