I will give the player an infrared or Electromagnetic Field vision camera that serves to spot enemys and also as a navigation tool.

As of now its a lot of wandering around but the camera thing should help you where to go.

Is there anything wrong with being into shmups but not particularly into otaku culture? For example, I found that paste bin mostly just slightly disgusting. Feels like the odd one out sometimes.

Depends. If your character is a cute girl, then you already know the answer.

Look at as much of the screen as possible. After playing enough you'll develop the ability to know where your character is without looking directly at it.

No, not really. There's shmups with aircraft, spaceships, or robots, or lolis, etc. Although some shitposters may claim otherwise.

Keep an eye on the general area around your character in the direction the bullets are coming from. If you're playing a vertical shmup, the bullets will probably be coming at you from above, so maybe keep your eyes like 4 hitbox-lengths above your character so that you can see bullets that are coming at you and move accordingly. It kind of depends on the type of shmup you're playing, what game, etc. but that's usually how I try to do it.

Or to put it another way, you try to more look at the enemies' bullets but keep your player character in your peripheral so that you know where you are at all times as well. I'm not really sure how to explain it all that well, you kinda just get used to it as you become more experienced with playing.

A little bit of both. Eventually you'll memorize enemy positions and attack patterns and it will help a lot.

Is there any westerner who ever made a good shmup?

Hurricane of the Varstray is pretty interesting. Would probably say it's worth the $3 it's on for right now. Game is really easy though so if it turns out that the scoring sucks then it's kinda a dud. The risk reward nature of the special attack seems like it could be interesting to optimize though.

Steredenn is fun and was made by some French dudes.

If there are Sine Mora cancels them out anyway.
